Novel Summary
In the sweltering, cypress-haunted parishes of Louisiana, former police sergeant Will Lassiter lives in enforced seclusion, his name forever stained by a viral 2024 police brutality case—Carter v. Lassiter et al.—where the internet has calcified a monstrous, distorted image of him. His only solace is his adopted daughter, Miranda, a flawless porcelain prodigy who came to them as a child from a shattered home. But as Miranda enters adolescence, the Lassiters begin to glimpse the cold, calculating void beneath her perfect surface. When small animals die and a classmate is driven to a breakdown, Will and his wife Claire realize they are raising a budding psychopath. Desperate to protect their disgraced family from further public ruin, they start covering her tracks, only to discover that Miranda is a virtuoso of the online world—manipulating every narrative, feeding the mob that hates her father, and reshaping memory itself. In the digital bayou, nothing is forgotten, but everything is a lie.
