Novel Summary
In the rusting northern city of Ironford, 68-year-old Elias Voss walks out of Hargrave Penitentiary after 34 years, exonerated by a forgotten medical record that a weary administrative judge finally chose to see. The system that stole his life has offered no apology, only a paperwork error. With a dying private investigator as his sole ally, Elias begins to trace the roots of his wrongful conviction for the murder of a child. He discovers that the atrocity was not born of grand conspiracy, but from a rookie detective’s small, desperate need to close a case before Christmas. That single, mediocre sin, planted in the shadow of ambition, grew into a network of silenced witnesses, fabricated forensics, and a power structure that must now kill again to protect its lie. A Dennis Lehane-style noir of belated justice, where the tragedy lies not in spectacular evil, but in the banality of its origins.
